Youth & Children's Art - Mitch Vane

Mitch Vane "I have had the honour of judging the Youth and Children's Artwork categories for the Cancer Council for four years now. As an artist I am always incredibly excited and inspired by the level of talent that I get to see by being involved in these Arts Awards. I am a firm believer that art is a great healer. Expressing your thoughts and feelings through an artistic medium really helps us cope with grief and make sense of this crazy world around us. The Cancer Council has provided such a great creative outlet for all those touched by cancer, and given budding artists an opportunity to share their thoughts and experiences with the public.

I am always profoundly moved by the contributing artist's images and personal stories"

Mitch Vane has had a long career working as an illustrator and artist - she works in a variety of mediums but is at her happiest drawing with a good old-fashioned dip pen and Indian ink. She often collaborates with her partner Danny Katz - her cartoons appeared with his weekly humour column in The Age for over twelve years, and they have created many children's books together, including The YABBA Award winning Little Lunch series and the recently released No Thanks Hanks & other Unmannerly Tales (Five Mile Press).

Mitch has illustrated a series of 12 Zodiac themed stamps for Australia Post
and created many children's books with publishers both in Australia and the U.S. including The Patch (Charlsbridge), Jasper McFlea Will not Eat his Tea (Lothian) and the 2011 CBCA short listed The Deep End (Penguin)

Mitch paints in her studio at home, and does various workshops and appearances at bookshops, libraries and schools throughout the year.
